Lopers Split with Roadrunners in Season Finale

Kearney, Neb. – University of Nebraska-Kearney would split a doubleheader with co-regular season conference champion Metro State College, winning game one 5-4, before dropping the final game of the season 10-7, Sunday afternoon at Dryden Park.

On senior day, Metro State (33-14, 28-11 RMAC) scored the first runs of the game in the second inning when Caitlin Jenks hit her second homer of the season to leftfield scoring Lauren Hainlen, who led off with a single to leftfield.

Nebraska-Kearney (16-29, 16-21 RMAC) would score three runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab 3-2 lead. Freshman third basemen Sarah Rome (Fort Calhoun) led off with a single down the leftfield line, another freshman second baseman Rose Smith (Blair) would reach first base on an error by the third basemen advancing to second was Rome.

Fellow freshman leftfielder Whitney Frederick (Blair) would hit single to right centerfield scoring the first two Loper runs in Rome from second and Smith from first. Finally senior catcher Cassie Keck (Blair) would hit a double down the leftfield line scoring the last run of the inning in Frederick from first base.

The Roadrunners scored their last two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Molly Clark hit a two run RBI single to right field giving the Roadrunners a short lived two run lead.

Senior DP Jessie Thomas (Yutan) lead off the bottom of the sixth inning with hard hit single to the second basemen, then was brought home on the game winning two run homer hit to left centerfield by Rome.

Junior starting pitcher Kirstie Hiatt (McCook) pitched her team leading 20th complete game of the season and finished with 13-16 record.

In game two started like game one did with the 'Runners getting on the scoreboard first with a leadoff homer by Amber Roundtree to centerfield, then got the other two runs off the bat of Clark, who singled to centerfield scoring Lauren Hainlen and Jennessa Tesone on the play.

The Lopers would score two run in their half of the first inning off the bat of Keck, who hit her 17th homer of the season to left centerfield, scoring Frederick, who lead off the inning with a double to right centerfield.

Keck, who hit 47 home run in her career, come up one homer shy of tying Darcie Berry, (1997-2000) school record of 48 home runs in a career.

UNK would add two more runs an inning later to grab a one run lead that was short lived, when Frederick and junior centerfielder Austin Wilson (McCook)hit back to back doubles scoring junior first baseman Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) on the double by Frederick, then Frederick scored on Wilson's double.

MSCD would tie the game when Tesone hit her first homer of the day and fifth of weekend in third inning to right centerfield. UNK would take the lead again in the bottom of the fourth to lead 6-4.

Metro would score six unanswered runs to take the lead 10-6, including a five run sixth inning which saw Tesone hit her sixth homer of the weekend.

Kearney would add one run in the seventh inning, when freshmen outfielder Emily Mierau (Grand Island) grounded out to the third basemen, scoring on the play was Thomas, who led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line.
