Kearney, Neb. – The Mesa State Mavericks baseball team won the 2011 RMAC Tournament by scoring six runs after two were out to beat Nebraska-Kearney,
6-5, Sunday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo.
The Lopers fall to 35-17 on the year and now get ready for next week's NCAA Tournament. Mesa (33-19), winning this event for the first time in five years, will also head to the Central Regional.
Senior
Andre O'Connor (Oakley, Calif.) threw exceptionally well in defeat, blanking Mesa for the first five innings. However, the Mavs scored its first two runs after two were out in the sixth and then tallied four more runs after two outs in the seventh.
UNK, which scored one run over the final five innings in Saturday night's 12-8 win over New Mexico Highlands, was limited to one run by Mesa lefty Tim Moore over the first seven innings.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, a Maverick error helped the Lopers score two. A single loaded the bases once more and then senior
Tim Urban (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) laced a two-run double to right to make it a 6-5 game. The UNO transfer is now 7 for 10 as a pinch hitter this spring.
Urban remained at second, however, as Mesa reliever Ben Sawyer got a strike out to end the eighth. In the Loper ninth, Maverick closer Taylor Hamilton coaxed senior 1b
Andrew Haake to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Senior pitcher
Roy Metter, senior catcher
Felix Segovia and senior centerfielder
Jason Trulin were named to the all-tourney team.
