Winona State Blanks Baseball; Lopers Need to Beat Mesa to Stay Alive

Brian Chritz
Kearney, Neb. – Winona State senior right hander Andrew DeSousa threw a complete game nine-hitter, and senior right fielder John Magee hit a two-run homer, to lift the Warriors to a 2-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney in an NCAA Tournament game Monday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.

Winona (38-17), which won a 10 inning game over St. Cloud State early Monday morning, advances to the region championship game. UNK (37-18) needs to beat Mesa State (35-20) at 3:45 p.m. to continue its season. The Lopers are 1-5 against the Mavericks this year.

If Mesa wins, the Mavs will play the Warriors for the region title tonight. If UNK wins, the title game will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. The NCAA national committee doesn't want a team (UNK) playing three games in one day.

Junior lefty Mike Loseke (Arvada, Colo.) one hit Winona over the first 4.1 innings but UNK couldn't take advantage, going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position in its first five at bats. Stranding six during this time, senior RF Patrick Oliver (Broomfield, Colo.) hit into an inning ending 8-2 double play in the fourth with senior CF Jason Trulin (2 for 3) being throwing out at the dish.

On the day, UNK stranded nine with the Warriors leaving eight on the base paths.

Winona strung together four straight hits in the bottom of the fifth with Magee (1 for 2) hitting his third homer of the year, a one out line drive that cleared the right field wall.

Improving to 6-1 on the year, DeSousa walked just two while fanning three. Loseke also went the distance, allowing nine hits as well with four K's and a walk.

Besides Trulin, senior LF Brian Chritz (Arvada, Colo.) went 3 for 4 and senior 3b Luke Valerius (Lakewood, Colo.) went 2 for 4.
