Late Rally Allows Regis to Sweep Baseball; RMAC's Up Next

Daren Grace
Kearney, Neb. - The Regis University baseball team scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning in game two to sweep a doubleheader from Nebraska-Kearney, 7-4 and 12-10, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

This was the final regular season series for both teams. The Lopers (32-15, 27-11 RMAC) will be the top-seed in next week's RMAC Tournament with the Rangers (22-25, 20-19 RMAC) also heading to Grand Junction, Colo.

Brackets for the tourney will be released by the RMAC office Saturday night.

In the nightcap, UNK padded a two-run lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Seven Lopers came to the plate with senior Felix Segovia (2 for 4, four RBI's) having the big hit of the inning, a two-run single to center.

Now down 10-4, the Rangers had to try and stay alive against UNK closer Jake Kresse (Bennington), who was aiming to tie the school-record for saves in a season (nine).

The first two Rangers reached via a single and Loper error. Another single followed and Regis was off to the races. By the end of the inning, eight runs had scored on eight singles and two errors. Prior to the seventh, Regis had eight hits over the first six innings.

Senior Bryant Asnicar picked up his first save by tossing a scoreless seventh and the Rangers first three hitters were a combined 8 for 12 with five runs scored and four RBI's.

Game one saw junior Mike McElreath allow four earned runs over 7.1 innings to improve to 4-4 on the year. Allowing nine hits, walking five and throwing two wild pitches, McElreath managed to win as the Lopers left 12 runners on base.

The Rangers also stranded 12 but pounded out 13 hits with catcher Nano Jacobsen (2 for 4) having a three-run double in the fifth. Two batters before, first baseman Zach Blakeley (3 for 5) hit a run scoring single that broke a two all tie.

UNK got solo homers from seniors Daren Grace (2 for 5, two RBI's) and Luke Valerius (Lakewood, Colo.) with senior Ricky Muir (Easton, Conn.) allowing one earned run in 3.1 innings of relief work.

The RMAC Tournament starts Wednesday, May 11th, and runs through Saturday.
