Women Lose Defensive Battle at CSUP

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Colorado State-Pueblo women's basketball team held Nebraska-Kearney to 22 percent shooting in a 52-38 win Saturday night in Colorado.

The ThunderWolves improve to 14-3 (11-2 RMAC) and beat the Lopers (5-13, 5-8 RMAC) for a sixth straight time.

In a defensive struggle, Pueblo made just 16 of 49 shots (32.7%) while UNK was at an even 22% (13 of 59), which included a 1 of 20 effort from behind the three point line.

Showing the offensive struggles for both teams, CSUP led 6-2 four minutes into the game and then neither team scored for almost five minutes.

Building a 23-12 halftime lead, the ThunderWolves lead was cut to 36-30 after a three point play by senior wing Vanessa Leeper Jones (Colo. Springs, Colo.) with seven minutes to go.

UNK, however, wouldn't score for almost two minutes and didn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Junior post Lauren Kearsley led Pueblo with 12 points and nine rebounds with fellow starter Katie Nehf at 11 points, six boards, three steals and two blocks.

The T-Wolves, which made only 16 of 29 free throws, had one more rebound than the Lopers, 45-44, but UNK had a plus 11 advantage in second chance points thanks to 16 offensive caroms.

Leeper Jones was the lone Loper in double figures as she had 11 thanks to 5 of 5 free throw shooting. Next, freshman post Melissa Norman (Elk Grove, Calif.) had a team-high nine rebounds and senior guard Debi Johnson (Elsie) had four steals.

UNK is at Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines next weekend.
