Hardrockers Down Women's Basketball

Box Score Kearney, Neb. - The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team saw three score in double digits, and forced 27 turnovers, in a 68-60 win over Nebraska-Kearney Sunday afternoon in Rapid City.

This was the regular season opener for both.

Leading from start to finish, Mines got out to a 39-26 halftime lead and never allowed the Lopers to get closer than six points after the break.

The 'Rockers, a D2 independent, jumped out to a 14-9 advantage, getting threes from senior guard Hillary Hawkins (14 points) and freshman reserve forward Olivia Antilla (16 points).

UNK made its move late in the second half, going on a 10-4 run over a seven minute span to make it 56-50 with 5:53 to play.

However, freshman guard Alexis Long (15 points) made a shot in the lane and Antilla added two free throws to push the  Mines lead back to double digit.

The Lopers shot an even 40% (20 of 50) but were just 4 of 18 from behind the arc and 16 of 28 at the line. Mines scored 17 points off those 27 turnovers and also got 28 points from its bench.

Junior wing Shelby Zimmerman (Beatrice) paced Kearney with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting. She also had four boards and two steals in 30 plus minutes.

Next, junior guard Sarah Hix (Broomfield, Colo.) hit two threes to score 10 points with Trenton freshman Laramey Lewis having a team-high nine boards and seven points coming off the bench.

Hawkins, Long and Antilla combined to make all nine of the 'Rockers threes with the trio also supplying eight rebounds and six steals.

UNK hosts U. of Sioux Falls Wednesday night.
