Hastings Rallies Past Road Weary Lopers

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Hastings College men's basketball team took advantage of 21 turnovers and finished on a 20-6 run to defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 87-75, Tuesday night at Lynn Farrell Arena in Hastings.
 
The Broncos improve to 5-0 while the Lopers fall to 1-2. This was UNK's first trip to Hastings in nine years.
 
Playing its third game in three days, the Lopers still shot the ball well, making 55% (28 of 51) of its shots. However, UNK ran out of gas in the final six minutes as the Broncos erased a 69-67 deficit and went on to win by double digits.
 
Two free throws by Dylan Flinn tied the game at 69 with 6:23 left. Kearney High graduate Dane Bacon then stole the ball and made two subsequent free throws to give Hastings the lead for good.
 
During the Broncos run, UNK had two turnovers, went 2 of 8 from the field and 1 of 3 at the line.
 
The up tempo game saw Hastings make 54% (33 of 61) of its field goals, including a 7 of 15 effort from behind the arc. UNK out rebounded its longtime rival by nine, 30-21, but Hastings committed just nine turnovers.
 
Arizona sophomore Pierre Newton paced Kearney with 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting. He was one of five Lopers to make at least one triple in the game. As a team, UNK was 9 of 13 (69%) from the arc.
 
Seniors Jon Henderson (13) and Akeem Morissaint (10) also reached double digits with senior post Drew Sankey (Lincoln East) one of three Lopers to grab five rebounds
 
Hastings used a balanced offensive attack as well, getting 22 points and four steals from Bacon, 13 points, four assists and three steals by Flynn and 15 points and fie board from Zach Lenagh.
 
These two teams play again December 18th in Kearney.
 
UNK has a day off before playing at Wayne State Thursday night and hosting 13th-ranked Colorado School of Mines Sunday afternoon.
