Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Doane College men's basketball shot 62% in the second half, and got 31 points from junior reserve Domonique Smith, to outscore Nebraska-Kearney, 103-97, Monday night in Crete.
The Tigers, ranked 8th in NAIA Division II, improve to 14-2 while the Lopers slip to 2-6.
UNK had a strong night offensively as it tallied 52 second half points and shot 57% (36 of 63) for the game. The Lopers also won the battle on the glass, 33-27, and sunk 20 of 23 free throws.
However, the Tigers were equal to the task thanks to 11 of 23 (47.8%) three point shooting. Kearney, meanwhile, was just 5 of 14 from downtown.
Doane, scoring 60 after the intermission, also got 40 points off its bench. Smith, a 6-4 transfer from Southeast C.C., was 10 of 13 from the floor, including a 6 of 8 effort from the three point line.
UNK controlled the action early on, leading 36-25 after a triple from sophomore
Tyler Shields (Kearney H.S.). Doane closed the half on an 18-9 run that featured a half court three by reserve Deonte Holt that beat the first half buzzer.
he Lopers managed to keep its lead for almost the first 10 minutes of the second half. However, the Tigers got the lead back when junior guard Nick Reed sunk two free throws to break a 66 all tie.
Doane never trailed again, opening up a 10-point cushion when Reed made a layup at the 3:33 mark. He scored 20 of his 21 points after the break by going 8 of 8 at the line and 6 of 7 from the floor.
Scoring 21 of its points off 13 Loper turnovers, Doane was 18 of 29 on its field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Besides Smith and Reed, Doane got 14 points from Jens Scholl and 13 points, six assists, five boards and four steals from Shavontae Samuels. Finally, the Tigers committed just seven turnovers, the fifth time this year a Loper opponent had fewer than 10 miscues.
UNK had three starters score in double digits, led by senior
Jon Henderson (24) and sophomore
Pierre Newton (22). The pair combined to go 16 of 26 from the field and 12 of 12 at the line.
