Men Score Late, Slip Past Regis

Tyler Shields
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior Jon Henderson scored a team-high 21 points, and freshman Ethan Brozek tallied 17, to help the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team slip past Regis, 75-71, Friday night in Denver, Colo.

The Lopers (13-8, 11-7 RMAC) are now 32-7 all-time against the Rangers (5-17, 2-16 RMAC).

This marked the first time UNK played without its top two scorers, sophomore post Mike Dentlinger and senior point guard Quinston Reggins, who have both been lost for the season due to injury. Reggins (Houston, Texas) was injured last Friday night vs. Colorado Mesa while Dentlinger (Millard North) went down in practice this week.

The new-look Lopers weren't fazed early on as they jumped out to a 24-9 lead nine minutes into the game. While Regis chipped away the deficit, trailing 41-33 at the break, UNK managed to gets its lead back to 13 points, 59-46, by the 11 minute mark of the second half.

A triple from senior Chris Deans (Hemingford) seemingly put Kearney in good shape, 68-60, with 3:12 to go. However, Regis went on a 9-0 run, sparked by Lance Korell's seventh three of the game, to grab its first lead of the night.

After the teams traded free throws, Henderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) converted a three-point play with 13 seconds to go to erase a 71-70 deficit. The lefty finished 9 of 18 from the floor to have his third game of 20 plus points this season.

UNK shot a super 52.8% (28 of 53) from the field and, despite the loss of Dentlinger, had a plus seven rebounding margin, 36-29. Regis did grab 13 offensive caroms that led to 20 second chance points.

Due to foul trouble, Brozek (Norfolk Catholic) played just 22 minutes but reached his point total by making seven of nine shots. He also had seven rebounds, five coming on the offensive end.

Finally, Deans made three treys to tally 13 points with true freshman Tyler Shields (Kearney H.S.) having nine rebounds and eight points in his first collegiate start.

A 6-1 reserve guard, Korell went 7 of 9 from beyond the arc to tally a game-high 27 points. Starters Demitrius Owens (15) and Dionte Goodlett (15) also reached double digits for the Rangers.

UNK is at nationally-ranked Metro State Saturday night.
