Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team steps out of conference Wednesday night to face rival Nebraska-Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Tip time is 7:00 p.m. for the last-ever men's college basketball game to be held in Sapp. The now-Division I Mavericks plan to play in the new Ralston Arena in coming seasons.
This will be the 87th meeting beteween the Lopers (13-9) and Mavs (10-16; 9-3 vs. non-Division I competition) with UNK holding a 46-40 series lead. UNO has won five of the last seven meetings but Kearney claimed a 86-74 victory last season.
UNO, most likely, will not be able to schedule UNK in the future as their new conference, the Summit, wants all members to play Division I schools. The Mavs and Lopers could meet for an exhibition game.
This series dates back to the 1919-20 season and the two teams have met in the regular season every winter since 1965. Of late, Sapp hasn't been kind to the Lopers as UNK hasn't won their since 2004.
Finally, Wednesday's game marks the first time since 1995-96 Kearney has played a regular season game against a Division I school or a school transition into Division I status. In 1995, UNK beat Southern Illinois and lost to UAB in Hawaii.
