Softball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader

Sarah Rome
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. - Fort Hays State junior Maddie Holub struck out 16 in game one, and had the game winning hit in game two, to lead the Tigers to a sweep of Nebraska-Kearney, 4-0 and 6-5, Tuesday afternoon in Kansas.

These were the opening games for both teams.

In the opener, Houlb threw a complete game one hitter, striking out each UNK starter at least once. Fanning the side in the first and fourth innings, she also recorded the final two outs via strikeout.

Sophomore 3b Sarah Rome (Ft. Calhoun) managed the only UNK hit, an infield single in the fifth.

UNK managed to keep it a scoreless game over the first two innings as McCook senior Kirstie Hiatt got back-to-back K's to leaves the bases full in the first and then got a ground ball double play in the second.

However, Hays tallied all four of its runs in the third as center fielder Amanda Vaupel hit a one out, three run homer to left. The first run crossed home plate due to a Loper error.

In game two, UNK had four hits with none bigger than Rome's two out, three-run double in the third. That capped a four run inning and tied the game at five.

Holub started the scoring with a solo homer in the first and a four run Tiger second featured a two-run shot from catcher Callie Wright.

Hays tallied the winning run when number nine hitter Madison Putnam led off the sixth with a walk and eventually moved to third on a ground ball. With two outs, Holub hit a ball down the left field line for a single.

For the Lopers, leadoff hitter Whitney Frederick (Blair) scored twice and went 1 for 3 with junior Becky Dunn (Papillion) fanning five in tossing a complete game 11-hitter.

UNK heads to Colorado this weekend for the RMAC/NSIC Crossover.
