Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior forward Alex Welhouse made six three pointers to score a game-high 24 points as Nebraska-Omaha beat Nebraska-Kearney, 85-68, Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks, now a Division I program, improve to 11-16 while the Lopers fall to 13-10. UNK still leads the all-time series, 46-41.
This marked the final men's college basketball game at Sapp, a building with 63 years of history. This also was UNO's final home game of the year.
The Mavericks got out to a 23-13 lead and never looked back as they committed just six turnovers and shot 42% (31 of 72) from the field.
UNK, for a fifth straight game, won the battle on the glass, 45-42, but 14 turnovers proved costly, especially early on.
The Lopers also made just 32% of its field goals (21 of 65) and three pointers (9 of 28).
Welhouse, standing 6-7, made 9 of 16 shots, including 6 of 9 from behind the three point line, to reach his point total. He also tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
Next, senior wing Mitch Albers had 19 points and six rebounds with freshman guard CJ Carter supplying 14 points, six boards, four assists and three steals. Finally, this Mav trio was in double digits by halftime.
