Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior shortstop Ashton McCoy drove in five runs as the 8th-ranked Emporia State baseball team had a seven-run fourth inning to defeat Nebraska-Kearney,
12-3, Sunday afternoon in Kansas.
With the win, the MIAA-Hornets (3-0) swept the series from the Lopers (0-3).
UNK, which had nine hits in the setback, erased a 2-0 hole by scoring all of its runs in the top of the fourth. The inning featured four hits, including an RBI double from junior 1b
Eric Ringblom (2 for 4).
Emporia quickly responded, however, by batting around in its half of the fourth. After having a two-run triple in the third, McCoy (2 for 5) had a two-run single in this inning as ESU registered half of its 12 hits.
Both bullpens were stellar as four Hornets came in and tossed 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. UNK, mean while, saw three different pitchers combine for five strikeouts and four scoreless innings.
One of these hurlers was redshirt freshman
Ross Mortensen (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Besides Ringblom, redshirt freshman 3b
Logan Krueger (Holyoke, Colo.) went 2 for 4 from the nine hole.
UNK heads to Missouri Western State, another MIAA school, next weekend.
