Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Western State women's basketball team scored four points in the final six seconds to slip past Nebraska-Kearney, 72-70, Sunday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.
The game was pushed back a day due to the winter storm that hit Nebraska this weekend.
Western (11-12, 10-7 RMAC), beating the Lopers for a third straight time, led most of the way but trailed 70-66 with 1:33 to play after junior guard
Ivy Jones (Vallejo, Calif.) scored six straight points.
After a bucket by Western post Katie Hall made it a two point game, the teams traded turnovers. With around 20 seconds left, UNK in-bounded the ball with a chance to pad its lead. However, the shot clock was winding down and a three by Jones missed and kicked out near center court.
The Mountaineers' Krista Cona picked up the loose ball and raced down the court for a game tying layup. On the ensuing inbounds pass, UNK tried to throw it deep but, instead, senior
Debi Johnson (Elsie) collided with Nikki Trujillo just past half court.
Trujillo hit the subsequent free throws and then a contested three, from around 30 feet, by Johnson misfired at the buzzer.
UNK (6-16, 6-11 RMAC) lost despite having a plus 10 rebounding margin, 48-38. That included 20 offensive caroms but the Lopers couldn't take advantage, finishing the day with a 35.4% (23 of 65) effort from the field.
Hall (13 points & 12 rebounds) was one of four Western starters to reach double figures as the 'Neers shot 41.9% (26 of 62) from the floor and scored 13 second chance points off 11 offensive boards. Trujillo had a team-high 21 points on 8 of 21 shooting while Cona added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
For the Lopers, senior Vanessa Leeper Jones (Colo. Springs, Colo.) had 13 points and six rebounds and sophomore
Shelby Zimmerman (Beatrice) had 11 points, a team-best seven boards and three steals.
UNK heads to Denver next weekend to face Regis and nationally-ranked Metro State.
