Baseball Can't Quiet Highlands Bats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The New Mexico Highlands baseball team had another big day at the plate to sweep Nebraska-Kearney, 26-10 and 10-2, Saturday at Memorial Field.

The Cowboys, who won Friday's game by a 10-8 score, improve to 13-1 (7-0 RMAC) with the Lopers (5-10, 3-4 RMAC) now riding a four-game losing streak.

With a stiff wind blowing out, the first game lasted nearly three hours as the teams combined for 36 runs on 36 hits, 12 hit batters, seven walks and six errors.  

Highlands had 24 of the hits, 12 going for extra bases, and broke a nine all tie thanks to a four-run fourth and a 12-run sixth inning. The HU fourth featured four hits and two Loper errors while the 'Pokes had 10 hits in the top of the sixth.

Third baseman Josh McMahon, the Cowboys number nine hitter, went 4 for 4 with three runs and six RBI's with left fielder Luis Saenz having three double en route to a 5 for 6 day. Batting clean up, he also scored four times and had four RBI's.

Catcher Robbie Ingram (3 for 4, five RBI's) and centerfielder Matt Gualco (4 for 6, four runs, three RBI's) had big days as well. 

For the Lopers, junior DH Eric Ringblom (Millard North) went 3 for 3 with two runs while three others knocked in two runs a piece, including redshirt freshman Brandon Pacheco (Kearney Catholic H.S.).

The Lopers blanked Highlands in six of the seven innings in the night cap. But, the Cowboys scored all 10 of its runs in the second on eight hits, including two home runs, to win going away.

In the HU second, first baseman Derek Ward hit a “Grand Slam” to left and then cleanup hitter Kyle Davis hit a wind-aided, two-run homer down the left field line.

On the mound, Eric Maupin earned his first win by tossing a seven-hit complete game, fanning 11 Lopers and walking just one.

For UNK, junior outfielders Alex Miller (Millard West) and Evan Connell (Papillion) each had two hits with senior Yancy Birch (Grand Junction, Colo.) throwing three scoreless innings in relief.

The series finishes up tomorrow with a single nine inning game starting at noon.
