Softball Scores Nine to Win Series Finale at ASC

Ali Serberger
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team scored five runs over the final three innings to hold off Adams State, 9-8, Sunday afternoon in the second game of a double header in Alamosa, Colo.

Using late inning heroics all weekend, the Grizzlies (6-10, 4-8 RMAC) took three of four from the Lopers (5-9, 2-6 RMAC), winning Saturday by scores of 5-1 and 6-5 and taking Sunday's first game in 11 innings, 5-4.

In the series finale, UNK grabbed a 4-0 lead after two and a half as senior center fielder Austin Wilson (2 for 4) smacked a two-run double and freshman shortstop Mallory Noakes (2 for 4) hit a two-run homer over the right field wall.

However, Adams scored two in its half of the third and fourth innings to tie things up.

UNK moved ahead again when senior second baseman Ali Seberger (Lexington) delivered a run scoring single in the fifth. But, Adams countered with a run in the bottom of the inning to force another tie.

The Lopers seemingly were in good shape as they crossed home plate three times in the sixth and once in the seventh. The sixth featured a five hits, including a two-run single to center by sophomore left fielder Whitney Frederick (Blair), while the Lopers took advantage of an error to add an insurance run in its final at bat.

Adams won Saturday's night cap and Sunday's first game on walk off singles. Trying for a third walk off win, the Grizzlies got a one out, three-run homer from first base man Erica Haugum to make it 9-8.

However, junior Becky Dunn (Papillion) got back-to-back K's to end the contest. Dunn (2-1) earned the win as she fanned five and walked none in four full innings.

Besides Wilson and Noakes, senior first baseman Dani Mowinkel (Scribner) and sophomore DP Mackenzie Tomlin (Grand Island) were the other Lopers to have two hits in the win.

In the 11 innings loss, Tomlin and sophomore catcher Jen Kramer (North Platte) each hit home runs with Seberger having four RBI's in Saturday's night cap thanks to a three-run dinger and sac fly.

Adams freshman Kelsey Sellars tossed a three hit complete game in the opener as she fanned one and walked three.

UNK hosts Metro State Wednesday afternoon starting at noon and then Colorado School of Mines visits next weekend.
