Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior
Kirstie Hiatt tossed a five-hit complete game to power Nebraska-Kearney over Metro State,
3-1, in the first game of a double header Wednesday afternoon at Dryden Park.
In the nightcap, Metro catcher Kelsey Tillery hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to provide the winning margin,
5-3. The Lopers are now 6-10 (3-7 RMAC) while the Roadrunners are 8-16 (5-7 RMAC).
Hiatt (McCook) picked up her fourth win this spring by blanking Metro for the first five innings and not allowing a single walk. Fanning three, the only run she gave up came after an outfielder misplayed a single.
UNK also took advantage of an error to score. In the bottom of the third, with runners at first and second with no outs, sophomore left fielder
Whitney Frederick (Blair) laid down a sac bunt that was fielded cleanly but the ensuing throw wasn't caught, allowing one Loper to score and put two in scoring position.
A sac fly from senior second baseman
Ali Seberger (Lexington) and an RBI single from sophomore catcher
Jen Kramer (North Platte) followed to complete the big inning. UNK had six hits in the win, coming from six different players.
Errors played a role in the second game as well as Metro broke a scoreless tie in its half of fifth by scoring three times thanks to two hits, two Loper errors and a walk. A two out, two-run single by second baseman Annalyse Garcia was the big blow.
But, UNK scored two in the bottom of the inning, and one more in the sixth, to tie things up. Metro pitcher Jordyn Randolph (1-6) worked out of a jam in the sixth as she got a strikeout and ground out with Lopers at first and third.
The eight hole hitter, third baseman Brittney Padilla, started off the Metro seventh with a sharp single to right and then moved to second on a sac bunt. That brought up Tillery, the team's leadoff hitter.
While she initially tried to bunt Padilla, she swung away on a 2-2 count and hit the ball over the left field fence for her team-leading ninth homer.
Randolph went the distance to earn her first win, fanning four and walking none while giving up 10 hits. UNK left eight runners on base with Seberger (3 for 4) and senior centerfielder
Austin Wilson (2 for 4) doing the most damage.
Junior
Becky Dunn (Papillion) was the tough luck loser, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks in seven full innings.
Colorado School of Mines comes to town this weekend for a four-game RMAC series.
