Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior center fielder
Austin Wilson had a pair of game winning hits to help the Nebraska-Kearney softball team sweep a double header from Colorado School of Mines,
2-1 and
2-1 (8 innings), Saturday afternoon at Dryden Park.
UNK is now 8-10 (5-7 RMAC) while the Orediggers fall to 9-18 (6-10 RMAC). Mines was the overwhelming the RMAC preseason favorite after going 28-11 in the league last season.
The Lopers have now won three straight one-run games after going 0-5 in such contests to start the year.
In game two, the Lopers were down to their final two outs as the 'Diggers Ashley Goletz allowed just four hits over the first 6.1 innings. However, senior right fielder
Allie Frost (Valley) belted her fourth homer of the year to knot the game at one.
Earlier this year, Frost hit a three-run walk-off homer to beat Colorado Christian, 8-5.
Mines had a golden chance to take the lead in its half of the eighth as a two out rally featured an infield single, a single to left and a walk. However, junior
Becky Dunn (3-2) caught a liner off the bat of designated player Stephanie Runia to end the inning.
Going the distance, Dunn (Papillion) fanned nine and walked four while allowing just four hits. Wilson (2 for 4) promptly ended the day when she led off the bottom of the eighth with her second homer of the season.
The McCook native had a chance to win the early game thanks to a key error. After sophomore catcher
Jen Kramer (North Platte) led off the Loper seventh with a double, a sac bunt by Frost was dropped by the 'Diggers, allowing pinch runner
Kenzie Helmink (Fairbury) to score.
UNK then flew out and grounded out but Frost managed to move up a base on the plays. Freshman designated player
Taryn Trosper (Grand Island), from the nine hole, managed to drew a walk off RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Kelly Unkrich to keep the inning alive.
That brought up Wilson, who hit a game winning single to center. Another McCook senior, Kirstie Hiat (5-6), got the win as she threw a complete game four-hitter, striking out four and walking three.
Mines scored its lone run in the third thanks to a sac fly. Unkrich (5-10) struck out 10 and walked four while also giving up four hits.
The two teams play a double header Sunday starting at 11:00 a.m.
