'Runners Take Two from Softball

Mackenzie Tomlin
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Metro State softball team hit five home runs and got complete games from Aubree Maul and Jordyn Randolph to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 15-6 (6 innings) and 7-3, Wednesday afternoon in Denver.

The Roadrunners improve to 13-17 (10-8 RMAC) while the Lopers (8-14, 5-11 RMAC) are now on a four-game skid.

In game one, Maul went 4 for 4 with three runs, five RBI's and two home runs as Metro scored three in the fourth, four in the fifth and five more in the sixth to erase a 6-3 Loper lead.

Finishing with 17 hits, Metro took advantage of two Loper errors to score four unearned runs off freshman reliever Taryn Trosper (Grand Island) in the fifth.

On the mound, Maul allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks. Also for the 'Runners, catcher and leadoff hitter Kelsey Tillery went 3 for 5 with three runs, four RBI's and her 11th homer of the year.

UNK saw senior first baseman Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) hit her fourth homer and sophomore left fielder Whitney Frederick (Blair) have a two-run single in a five run fourth.

Tillery continued to swing a hot bat as she went 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBI's and another homer in the night cap. Center fielder Molly Clark supplied the 'Runners other dinger as she finished 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBI's.

Randolph (3-7) shut out the Lopers for the first five innings, surrendering one hit during that stretch. She ended up allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk while fanning two.

For the Lopers, sophomore designated player Mackenzie Tomlin went 3 for 3 with a run scored from the nine hole and senior right fielder Allie Frost (Valley) led off the seventh with her fifth homer of the spring. Three of her five long balls have now come in the seventh inning.

UNK's road trip continues with four league games at Colorado-Colorado Springs this weekend.
