Baseball Splits Series at Colorado Mines

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team split a weekend series at Colorado School of Mines thanks to another dominating Sunday performance and by having 39 hits in two victories.

The Lopers (9-15, 8-8 RMAC) won the series finale, 16-9, and Saturday's first game, 13-4. The Orediggers (8-12, 7-9 RMAC) took the opener Friday night, 15-10, and the second game on Saturday, 4-3.  

UNK has won all four of its RMAC Sunday games this year by a combined score of 62-22.

In the series finale, the Lopers pounded out 20 hits with six different players have two or more. Junior right fielder Brian Wuest (4 for 6, three RBI's) and redshirt freshman second baseman Dillon Schroeder (4 for 6, two runs, two RBI's) had the biggest efforts with junior center fielder Alex Miller (3 for 6, two runs, two RBI's) having the team's lone homer.

The Lopers crossed home plate eight times in the second with Wuest having a two-run triple, Schroeder knocking in a run with a double and redshirt freshman Brandon Pacheco (2 for 5, three runs) following with an RBI triple.

Redshirt freshman Michael Hahn was one of four pitchers to throw and earned his first collegiate win by allowing three earned in four full innings.

This game was similar to the second as UNK had 19 hits and used a seven-run second to roll to a 13-4 win. Four different Lopers had three hits, including senior shortstop Mike Nowak (2 for 3, three RBI's) and redshirt freshman Reid Carter (3 for 4, three RBI's).

Junior Adam Peters (3-2) went the distance, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while walking none with two strikeouts.

In the second game, Mines turned the tables as Peter Herrin threw an eight-hit complete game, allowing two earned runs and no walks with two K's. Kyle Wallace (3 for 3) led a 'Digger offense that had 10 hits and scored a run in the first and three more in the second.

Senior lefty Mike Loseke (1-3) struck out five in tossing a complete game while Carter and Pacheco each had two hits.

Finally, the 'Diggers took advantage of six Loper errors to score six unearned runs in a 15-10 win Friday night. UNK also had three balks as Mines scored two in the fourth, six in the fifth and three more in the sixth to blow things open.

Junior third baseman Chase Saxton (4 for 5, two runs, two RBI's) and junior first baseman Eric Ringblom (3 for 6, four RBI's) were part of a 17-hit Loper attack.

UNK hosts Colorado State-Pueblo next weekend.
