Box Score 4 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team got strong pitching performances from senior
Kirstie Hiatt and junior
Becky Dunn, and sophomore third baseman
Sarah Rome hit three home runs, as the Lopers took three of four from Colorado-Colorado Springs this weekend.
The Lopers (11-15, 8-12 RMAC) won Saturday by scores of
7-1 and
5-0 and then took the series final,
13-5, in five innings. The Mountain Lions (11-16, 9-12 RMAC) capped a wild seventh inning with a walk-off Grand Slam to win Sunday's first game,
8-6.
Hiatt (McCook) started the weekend off with an eight-hit complete game. Fanning three and walking none, she blanked UCCS over the final six innings. Offensively, the Loper scored five times in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Rome (Blair).
Senior second baseman
Ali Seberger (2 for 4) hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning of game two to quickly give UNK the lead. That was all Dunn (Papillion) needed as she threw a four-hit complete game shutout that featured eight K's and no walks.
Rome went 3 for 3 and led off the sixth with a homer to center.
UNK was poised for another win as it scored three times in the top of the seventh to grab a 6-4 lead Sunday afternoon. A two-run triple from senior center fielder
Austin Wilson (2 for 4, two runs, three RBI's) put the Lopers ahead and then freshman shortstop
Mallory Noakes (Lincoln SW) followed with a sac fly.
However, the Lions first three batters hit singles to load the bases in the bottom of the inning and then Lara Matthewson ended the game with a dramatic homer.
The Lopers more than bounced back as they used a seven-run fourth inning to blow up a 6-3 game in the series finale. Finishing the game with 12 hits, UNK's big inning featured a Grand Slam by senior first baseman
Dani Mowinkel (2 for 5, five RBI's) and a two-run shot by Seberger.
Rome (1 for 2) gave Kearney another early led with a two-run homer in the first.
UNK plays at UNO Wednesday afternoon.
