Dramatic Homer Helps Softball Split with Young Cougars

Allie Frost
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior right fielder Allie Frost hit a two out, three-run walk off homer to lift Nebraska-Kearney to an 8-5 win over Colorado Christian in the first game of a double header Sunday afternoon at Dryden Park.

The first-year Cougars (8-11, 4-2 RMAC) turned the tables in the night cap as junior designated player Shelbi Long hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to break a seven all tie. CCU hung on a for a 10-9 win as Loper sophomore 3b Sarah Rome (Blair) made things interesting with a two out, two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.

Frost (Valley) finished game one 3 for 4 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Hitting a solo homer in the fourth to cut into a 3-1 Cougar lead, she was part of a six run rally in the seventh.

On a day with winds gusting near 40 miles per hour, more than a few routine fly balls turned into doubles. One came off the bat of senior CF Austin Wilson (3 for 4), who started the UNK seventh with a wind aided double to left.

Two batters later, freshman SS Mallory Noakes (2 for 4, two runs, two RBI's) stroked a two-run double to center and took to third on the throw home. Senior 2b Ali Seberger ( 2 for 2, two RBI's) then followed with a game tying double to right center.

With pinch runner Kenzie Helmink (Fairbury) at third, Rome (Blair) managed to draw a two out walk. That brought up Frost, who worked CCU's Mariah Bledsoe to a full count. Frost promptly launched the next pitch over the left field wall for the winning margin.

McCook senior Kirstie Hiatt (3-2) threw a complete game seven hitter, fanning six and walking three. She also allowed just one earned run as CCU took advantage of three UNK errors.

In game two, the Cougars tallied five runs in the top of the first on five hits. However, the Lopers fought back, scoring four times in the second and tallying single runs in three other innings to have the contest tied at seven by the fifth.

CCU started its half of the seventh with two singles. Long then hit a ball similar to Frost, one that cut through the wind and over the left field fence. This marked just the second Cougar homer all season.

Seberger (3 for 4, two RBI's) and Rome (2 for 3, two runs, three  RBI's) paced the Loper offense with senior 1b Dani Mowinkel (Scribner) hitting her first dinger of the year. Finally, freshman Taryn Trosper (Grand Island) threw 6.1 innings of strong relief in a losing effort.

The two teams play a double header Monday starting at noon.
