Box Score 3 Kearney, Neb. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team scored 43 runs to win the last three games of a series with Nebraska-Kearney this weekend in Grand Junction, Colo.
Due to Easter, all RMAC series were moved up one day. After winning all four games in the series, the Mavericks are now 25-9 (19-5 RMAC) with the Lopers slipping to 10-22 (9-15).
Mesa won Thursday's nine-inning contest 14-4 and then swept Friday's double header by scores of 24-2 and 12-10. On Saturday, CMU took another nine-inning game, 7-4.
Loper miscues in the field played a big part in the final two games in the series. UNK led Saturday's second game 10-4 before Mesa scored eight in the bottom of the sixth to win by two.
In that inning, Mesa recorded five hits, got hit by a pitch three times, drew one walk and took advantage of a two out error to score its runs. Overall, four of the Mavs runs were unearned.
UNK had scored seven in its half of the fourth to grab an 8-4 lead. Among the five hits in the inning was a two-run double by redshirt freshman
Reid Carter (2 for 5) and a two-run single by junior DH
Tommy Barnes (3 for 4).
On Saturday, the Lopers had three errors that led to five unearned runs for Mesa. A four run Maverick second included one UNK error and a two-run single by Jeff Popick (2 for 2). Later, CMU scored two insurance runs in the seventh on two hits and a Loper throwing error.
Junior
Cory Ridenour (2-7) took the loss despite allowing one earned run in five full innings with Barnes going 3 for 5 at the plate. Three others had two hits in the setback, including junior third baseman
Brandon Pacheco (2 for 4, one run).
Finally, Mesa scored 15 runs in the first inning of Saturday's opener. Finishing with 21 hits, Mesa also had a three-run second and a four-run third.
UNK hosts Metro State next weekend at Memorial Field.
