Softball Walks Chadron Off, Win Streak at 8

Austin Wilson
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior center fielder Austin Wilson hit a walk off Grand Slam to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep a double header and the series from Chadron State, 6-3 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon at Dryden Park.

Due to Easter, all RMAC series were moved up one day. UNK (19-17, 16-12) has swept its last two RMAC series to be on an eight-game win streak with the Eagles falling to 13-16 (11-19).

In game two, sophomore left fielder Whitney Frederick (Blair) led off the top of the seventh with her first homer of the year to tie the game at two and force extra innings. The Lopers had a chance to win the game in seven but left the a runner stranded at second.

UNK didn't make the same mistake again as sophomore third baseman Sarah Rome (Ft. Calhoun) led off the eighth with a double and then senior 1b Dani Mowinkel (Hooper) followed with a walk.

Eventually, an Eagle error loaded the bases and kept the inning alive. With two outs, Wilson (2 for 3) stepped to the plate and delivered a towering shot over the left field fence. It marked the McCook native's third long ball of the season and made a winner out of Papillion junior Becky Dunn.

Dunn (8-6) earned the win by striking out six and walking none in eight full innings. Allowing eight hits, Dunn saw Chadron hit two infield singles to move ahead 2-1 in the fifth. Chadron's Stephanie Townsed (6-12) also threw well but walked nine and struck out nine in going 7.2 innings.

Senior Kirstie Hiatt (McCook) overcame a rocky start to earn her 11th win in the first game.

Going the distance for the 12th time this spring, she shut out Chadron over the last six innings and gave up just six hits.

Four of those hits came in the first 1.2 innings as the Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. However, a double play ended the Chadron second and sent Hiatt on her way.

UNK scored three in its half of the first to grab the lead for good. Senior 2b Ali Seberger (2 for 2) belted a ground rule two-run double to dead center and then scored on an error by the Eagle catcher. Later, a three-run Loper fourth featured another Chadron error that would've been a sac fly for Wilson (1 for 3, one RBI).

The Lopers host Fort Hays State Tuesday afternoon and then play at Colorado Mesa next weekend.
