Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Point guards
Nicole Arp and
Ivy Jones each recorded career high point totals to help Nebraska-Kearney out last Missouri Southern State, 67-60 in overtime, Saturday afternoon in Joplin, Mo.
Snapping a five-game losing streak, the Lopers (5-10, 2-6) hand the Lions (10-5, 4-3) just its second home loss this season. This was the first meeting between the two in 23 years.
In a game that featured two big first half runs by both clubs, UNK was poised for a regulation win after Arp (Kearney H.S.) made a layup with 1:57 left, making the score 55-50.
However, MSSU outscored the Lopers 6-1 the rest of the way to force another five minutes. During this stretch, UNK went 2 of 4 at the line and committed two turnovers. Southern tied the game at the buzzer when 6-1 junior post Dominique Mosely tallied a put back bucket.
UNK dominated the extra session as they held the Lions to 1 of 11 field goal shooting. Southern struggled all day on offense, shooting 28.1% (18 of 64).
Scoring the game's final seven points, the Lopers took the lead for good after junior
Shelby Zimmerman (Beatrice H.S.) made a layup with 2:25 left. Soon after, Trenton freshman
Laramey Lewis made a shot in the lane and then sophomore post
Melissa Norman (Elk Grove, Calif.) made one of two free throws to make it a six point spread.
Sinking 21 free throws, and 21 field goals, the Lopers got out to a 21-8 cushion, only to see Southern responded with a 22-7 outburst that gave them the lead at the break. Kearney led by as many as seven points in the second half before MSSU went on that late two minute run.
Coming back from injury, Jones (Vallejo, Calif.) scored a game-high 20 points thanks to seven made field goals and a 5 of 8 effort at the line. Her previous high of 13 points was set earlier this year in a win at San Francisco State.
Arp came off the bench to go 7 of 7 at the line and 2 of 3 from behind the arc. Scoring 15 points in 24 minutes, her previous career high of 13 was set vs. Colorado Mesa in December 2010.
Also, Zimmerman came up one rebound short of a double double (14 & nine) with Lewis providing nine points and eight boards in playing all 40 minutes.
Nicole Hartzog (11) was the only Southern player in double digits.
UNK remains on the road next week with games at Truman State (Thurs.) and Southwest Baptist (Sat.).
