Division I Bears Blank Football

Andre O'Neal
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The 20th-ranked Central Arkansas Bears scored 10 early points and held Nebraska-Kearney to 169 yards of offense in a 31-0 win Saturday afternoon in Conway, Ark.

UCA, an FCS (formerly I-AA) member, improves to 3-3 while the Lopers fall to 1-5.  In UNK's only other visit to Arkansas, they were shut out by Arkansas State, 32-0, in 1953.

A balanced Bear attack, with 12 different players catching a pass, racked up 462 yards of offense (287 passing and 175 rushing). UCA scored the first two times they touched the ball, going 83 and 58 yards, respectively, but those were the only points of the first half as the UNK defense blanked the Bears in the second quarter.

UCA eventually scored two TD's in the third quarter, and added another one in the fourth, to finish the scoring.

UNK's best opportunity to score came late in the game when junior WR Andre "Squeak" O'Neal (Miami, Fla.) returned a punt 46 yards to the UCA 33-yard line.  However, a few plays later, redshirt freshman QB Sam Brauer (Seward) ran for one yard on 4th and 2 from the Bear 10-yard line.

The Lopers ended with 38 carries for 88 yards with Brauer and true freshman Luke McNitt (Kearney H.S.) combining to go 11 of 25 for 88 yards in the air.

Individually, O'Neal had eight catches for 58 yards, three carries for nine yards and three kick returns for 43 yards. Next, sophomore running back Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) had 15 carries for 42 yards with McNitt throwing for 75 yards.

Central Arkansas rushed for three scores, including a seven yarder by senior QB Wynrick Smothers. He ended the day with 200 yards of total offense (177 passing and 33 rushing).

Defensively, senior ILB Kellen Werner (Grand Island H.S.), sophomore safety Boone Anderson (Milford) and redshirt freshman ILB Tyke Kozeal (Sargent) each made nine tackles.

UNK hosts Lincoln University next Saturday.
