Football Falls to Hays in Season Finale

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Fort Hays State sophomore quarterback Treveon Alberts tied a school-record with five touchdown passes to help the Tigers post a 56-17 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon in Kansas.
 
This was the season finale for both teams. This marks the Tigers (6-5, 4-5) first winning season since 2009 while UNK ends 3-8 (3-6).
 
Alberts went 20 of 27 for 357 yards and no INT's. Completing passes to six different receivers, his scoring passes covered 5, 6, 24, 44 and 49 yards.
 
Receiver Tanner Hageman had eight catches for 88 yards and one TD with Ed Williams having four receptions for 124 yards and two scores. Also, Keaton Callins had three catches for 92 yards and two TD's.  

On the ground, running back Andrew Smith rushed 24 times for 210 yards and two one-yard scoring runs. Hays ended with 711 yards of total offense.
 
UNK scored all 17 of its points in the first half to stay with the Tigers. However, two turnovers directly led to 14 points as the Tigers went ahead 28-17 at the break. 
 
Right after an interception, Alberts threw a 49-yard TD pass to Callins for a 7-0 lead. Later, on the first play after recovering a UNK fumble, Hays saw Smith run 51 yards to the Loper four. He scored three plays later to make it 21-10.
 
In the second half, Hays outscored Kearney 28-0. Their scoring drives covered 42, 74, 85 and 88 yards, respectively.  
 
Offensively for the Lopers, sophomore RB Romero Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.) had 17 carries for 94 yards and one TD (23 yards). Next, Junior WR Andre O'Neal (Miami, Fla.) was extremely busy, having nine catches for 43 yards, three rushes and three punt or kick returns totaling 49 yards.
 
Making his second career start, Lexington sophomore QB Tyler McKeone was 19 of 25 for 163 yards, one TD and two INT's. He also rushed 11 times for 17 yards.
 
Completing passes to nine different teammates, McKeone found senior RB Stephan Rush (Merna) from 18 yards out early in the first quarter to tie the game at seven.
 
Defensively, both senior Kellen Werner (Grand Island) and redshirt freshman Tyke Kozeal (Sargent) broke Darren Gunn's single season tackle record of 110, set in 1990.

Kozeal had a team-high 12 tackles today with Werner making 10. For the fall, they each made 117 stops. Finally, senior defensive back Kenny Hill (San Diego, Calif.) had 11 tackles.
