Kearney, Neb. – A busy stretch continues for the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team as they play at Sioux Falls tomorrow night, November 26th.
The Lopers (3-2) take on the USF Cougars (3-0), a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, at 7:00 p.m.
KGFW will be airing the game live on the radio and
over the internet. There is no live stats for this game, nor an America One broadcast.
Last year in Kearney, UNK posted a 54-45 overtime win over USF, which just moved into Division II a few years ago.
This Cougar squad has gotten off to a fast start, thanks to a balanced scoring attack and solid defense. Five-seven sophomore guard Taylor Varsho is at 18.7 points per game with teammate Laura Johnson (12.3 ppg), a 6-0 senior forward, also having made nine threes.
Five-eight junior guard Jaicee Ulmer (10.3) is the other USF player averaging in double figures.
As team, Sioux Falls shoots just 37% from the field but holds the opposition to 61.3 points per game.
In last year's tilt against the Lopers, Johnson had a big effort (14 points, 12 rebounds, six assists & three blocks) with Ulmer coming off the bench and provinding nine points, six steals and five rebounds.
UNK got a team-high 15 points from senior
Shelby Zimmerman (Beatrice). After USF missed two free throws, she forced overtime at 42 all thanks to last second layup.
Zimmerman then scored five more points in the extra session to help UNK win going away. This year, she is at 16.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 53% from the floor.
Five other Lopers are also making half their shots; sophomore post
Chantal Thomas (62.5%), freshman wing
Kelsey Fitzgerald (57.1%), senior guard
Sarah Hix (56.8%) and junior posts
Queen Ohamara and
Amarah Williams (both 50.0%).
UNK stays on the road next week with MIAA games at Missouri Southern State (Dec. 5th) and Southwest Baptist (Dec. 7th).
