Late Rally Not Enough as Men Lose 96-93

Mike Dentlinger now has 982 career points
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team got 29 points from senior guard Rashaad Brown-Peterson to survive a late rally by Nebraska-Kearney, 96-93, Saturday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

With the last second win, the Bearcats improve to 7-3 (1-1) while the Lopers fall to 2-4 (0-2).

For the second straight year between these two teams, the game came down to a final shot. Unfortunately for the Lopers, this marked the second straight year the last shot didn't fall.

Ahead for the final 29 minutes and up by as many as 17 in the second half, SBU had one turnover and went 3 of 6 at the line in the last 1:06 to give the Lopers a chance.

Junior guard Davion Pearson (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a three and, after two missed free throws by Brown-Peterson, converted a layup to make it only a three point game, 93-90.

After SBU sunk two free throws, Pearson hit another triple with 14 seconds to go. Brown-Peterson then went 1 of 2 at the line to keep it a one possession game.

However, a potential game tying shot by freshman guard Kevin Dineen (Creighton Prep) didn't go through the net.

A 6-1, 210 lbs. senior from Milwaukee, Brown-Peterson reached his point total by making nine field goals (two threes) and nine free throws. Playing all 40 minutes, he also had five assists and a steal.

Junior forward Desi Barmore (15 points, eight rebounds and two steals) was productive in just 24 minutes with reserve post Jaywuan Hill scoring 11 points in only 15 minutes of work.

In a game that featured 50 fouls, 62 free throws and four players fouling out, Southwest made 55% (33 of 60) of its shots and had a plus four rebounding margin, 34-30.

UNK, scoring 57 second half points, went 32 of 60 (53%) from the field and, like SBU, made 21 freebies.  Individually, senior post Mike Dentlinger (Millard North) came off the bench and made all eight shots he took to have a team-high 22 points.

Next, Pearson scored all 21 of his points after the break as he went 4 of 5 from the three point line. He also had six assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Finally, Ravenna sophomore Connor Beranek had 20 points and seven rebounds with Benkelman senior post Kendal Glidden having 12 points and six boards before fouling out early in the second half.

UNK hosts Bellevue (Thursday) and Lincoln (Saturday) next week
