Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Fort Hays State scored 62 points in the first half, on 70% shooting, to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 94-68, Saturday afternoon in Kansas.
The Tigers (15-6, 9-4) have now won six straight over the Lopers (6-15, 3-10).
UNK was a bit short handed as junior post
Mike Dentlinger (12.9 points & 5.1 rebounds per game) sat out due to injury. He could return to the action next Saturday when Hays visits the Lopers.
Becoming the fourth UNK opponent to score 90 or more points this season, Hays made 23 of its 33 first half field goals (69.7%), including a 9 of 14 effort from beyond the arc. The hot shooting turned an 18-12 lead into a 45-21 cushion.
UNK, outscoring the Tigers 36-32 after the break, committed 17 turnovers, directly leading to 22 points for Hays. The black & gold also dominated inside, scoring 40 of its points in the paint.
A balanced attack was paced by 5-8 freshman guard Craig Nicholson and 6-3 junior reserve guard Carson Konrade, each tallying 16 points on a combined 12 of 16 shooting (6 of 8 threes).
Overall, FHSU went 13 of 22 from down town (59.1%) with six different players sinking at least one three. Besides his shooting, Nicholson also handed out 11 assists and had three rebounds.
The Lopers, who finished with a plus four rebounding margin and a respectable 43.5% (20 of 46) effort from the field, was led by Utah senior
Jon Henderson.
The lefty scored 19 points on7 of 14 shooting (3 of 5 threes) in playing just 28 minutes. Off the bench, Minden sophomore
Ben Petersen had a team-best eight rebounds.
