Hornets Blank Lopers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Seniors Karley Schmelzer and Lauren Sharp tossed back-to-back five inning complete game shut outs to power Emporia State to a double header sweep of Nebraska-Kearney, 12-0 and 8-0, Saturday in Kansas.
 
The Hornets, who received votes for the national Top 25 poll this week, improve to 12-7 (2-2) while the Lopers slip to 5-13 (1-3).
 
Schmelzer (9-3) and Sharp (3-4) combined to allow just six hits and a walk while fanning nine. Meanwhile, the Hornet offense struck early and often as 14 of its 20 runs crossed home plate in the first inning.
 
In game one, Emporia scored nine runs in its first at bat with the Lopers needing three pitchers to get out of the inning. Taking advantage of one Kearney error and a walk, senior second baseman Amanda Self (2 for 3, four RBI's) started the scoring with a three-run double.

Overall, nine of ESU's 11 hits came in the first. Grand Island sophomore Taryn Trosper did allow just one earned run in 3.1 innings of relief work.
 
Emporia was at it again in the night cap, having six hits and taking advantage of two Loper errors to grab a 5-0 lead after one complete.  Two innings later, redshirt freshman DP Cacy Williams (2 for 3) hit a two-run homer and sophomore third baseman Jessica Gragg followed with a solo shot to left center.
 
In relief of Trosper (0-1), Iowa sophomore Brittnie Kreiser gave up one earned in two innings. Also, after a big Friday, freshman catcher Erin Dwyer (Elmwood) went 2 for 3 today.
 
UNK has its home opener this Wednesday as Wayne State comes to town for two non-conference games.
