Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – True freshman right fielder
Anthony Pacheco belted a one out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep a double header from Fort Hays State, 10-5 and 8-7, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Finally at home after a 14-game, month long road trip, UNK improves to 11-9 (11-7) and takes two from the Tigers for the first time in 24 years.
Hays, in its first trip to Kearney since 2005, falls to 11-11 (8-1).
UNK smacked 16 hits in the night cap but left 13 runners on base, leaving the bases full in the sixth and eighth innings. However, the Lopers came back from deficits of 2-1, 5-2 and 6-4 by scoring two in the sixth and two in the eighth.
The Tigers moved ahead for the last time when third baseman Kelton Rule (3 for 5) hit a two-out single in the top of the ninth inning to bring home shortstop Sam Thornton.
Sophomore center fielder
Brandon Landanger (3 for 5) stared the Loper rally with a single to right center. That brought up Pacheco, UNK's lead off hitter.
Facing a submarine style thrower in Kyle Leroy, the left-handed Pacheco (4 for 6) lofted a deep short to left center. With the wind blowing slightly out, the ball managed to just clear the outfield wall for Pacheco's second career collegiate dinger.
Sophomore
Ross Mortensen (Colo. Springs, Colo.) threw two innings to earn the win with sophomore southpaw
David Boddiger (Longmont, Colo.) allowing one run over two innings as well.
Also for the Lopers, sophomore second baseman
Danny Droll went 3 for 5 and senior DH
Eric Ringblom went 2 for 5 with two RBI's.
In game one, UNK scored five times in the second and then hung on to win by five. Four different Lopers had two hits, led by junior third baseman
Scott Jameson (2 for 3, two runs & two RBI's) and Pacheco (2 for 4, two RBI's).
Jameson and Pacheco each drove in a pair of runs in the second with Ringblom hitting a key two-run homer in the sixth to give UNK a six-run cushion.
Making his first start as a Loper, junior righty
Dalton Cowen (Gillette, Wyo.) improved to 4-2 by throwing six solid innings. He gave up just three earned on five hits and three walks.
Weather permitting, UNK is back on the road this weekend, travelling to Lindenwood in suburban St. Louis.
