Lions Slip Past Lopers Twice

Jayke Brock
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Lindenwood Lions used some timely hitting to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 5-4 and 8-7, Friday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.

Both teams are now at .500 for the season – LWU (12-12) and UNK (11-11) -- and 11-8 in MIAA play. With the setbacks, the Lopers slip to 2-8 in true road games.

In game two, Lindenwood scored in six different innings, and tallied four of its runs after two outs, to hold off UNK.

The Lopers got three-run double from junior outfielder Jayke Brock (Grand Junction, Colo.) in the seventh and a two-run double from freshman outfielder Anthony Pacheco (3 for 6) in the ninth to make things very interesting.

However, Lions reliever Matt Meier got a strikeout to end the game. UNK out hit LWU, 16-10, but left 13 runners on base.

Besides another good showing from Pacheco (Kearney), sophomore shortstop Dillon Schroeder (Kearney) and sophomore catcher Max Ayoub (Grand Island) collected three hits from the fifth and sixth spots in the lineup.

On the bump, Colorado lefty David Boddiger didn't allow an earned run in three inning of relief work.

The first game was a pitcher's duel as each team had just six hits. The Lions scored two in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pick up the win. Of note, both of LWU's runs in the third were unearned.

The Lopers erased a 2-1 deficit with a three-run fourth that featured RBI's from Schroeder (2 for 3), Pacheco and senior DH Eric Ringblom (Omaha). However, UNK was shut out over the final three innings.

Lindewood used two doubles, a single and error to tie the game in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, a single and hit by pitch put two Lions on the bases. Junior first baseman Mike Failoni (3 for 4) then delivered the game winner with a single.

Junior third baseman Scott Jameson (Lovell, Wyo.) went 2 for 3 from the eight hole with Gering junior Carlos Palomo allowing two earned in 5.1 innings.

Weather permitting, the two teams play a nine inning game tomorrow afternoon
