Another Late Rally Powers UNK over LWU

Kyle Honeycutt
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team scored eight unanswered runs, including four in the ninth, to rally past Lindenwood, 10-9, in 11 innings Saturday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.

The Lopers improve to 12-11 (12-8) with Lions falling to 12-13 (11-9).

To salvage the last game of the series, UNK needed to come back from a 9-2 hole. Lindenwood busted things open with a five-run fifth that featured three doubles and three passed balls. The Lions then tacked on three more runs over the next two innings to lead by seven heading into the eighth.

Finishing with 19 hits, the Lopers scored three in the eighth, four in the ninth and one in the 11th to cap an unlikely rally.

Redshirt freshman designated hitter Kyle Honeycutt (Millard South) came off the bench in the fifth and ended 3 for 3 with four RBI's. Two of those RBI's came in the eighth as he hit a two-out double to bring home senior 1b Brian Wuest (3 for 6, two runs & two RBI's) and sophomore 2b Danny Droll (3 for 5, three runs).

Down 9-5, the Loper ninth featured five hits and a hit batter. With two down, Honeycutt tied things with a single.

Sophomore SS Dillon Schroeder (4 for 6, two runs & two RBI's) led off the 10th with a single but was stranded, one of 18 Lopers left on base. However, that wouldn't be repeated in the 11th as Droll (Penrose, Colo.) led off with a double and, after a hit batter and walk, came home on a sac fly by Honeycutt.

Redshirt freshman Joe Smidt (North Platte) earned the winning by blanking the Lions over the final three innings. Junior Ethan Poulsen (Longmont, Colo.) also was effective, throwing 1.2 of scoreless relief.

Finally, sophomore center fielder Brandon Landanger (Kearney) went 2 for 4 with two runs from the nine hole.

Lindenwood was paced by junior first baseman Mike Failoni, who went 5 for 6 with four RBI's.

UNK heads to Washburn on Tuesday for a double header and then hosts Emporia State next Friday and Saturday. That series is bumped up a day due to Easter.
