Pitt Rallies Twice, Scores in the 7th to Sweep Lopers

Mallory Noakes
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas used two rallies to sweep a double header from the Nebraska-Kearney softball team, 4-3 and 5-3, Sunday afternoon at a very windy Dryden Park.

With the come from behind victories, Pitt improves to 21-19 (9-11) while UNK falls to 8-24 (3-13).

The Lopers were poised for a 3-1 win in the night cap as the Gorillas were down to their final two outs. However, the wind caught a routine pop up and UNK couldn't catch it, giving Pitt some hope.

The Gorillas number eight hitter, second baseman Riley Campbell (2 for 3, two RBI's), followed with an RBI double and then came on home on a single by the ninth hitter in the order, shortstop Devon McCreath (1 for 2).

After a sac bunt moved McCreath to second, right fielder Catie Cummins hit a homer to right center to provide the game winning hit.

Samantha Grove (5-3) threw a complete game six-hitter, fanning one and walking one. No hitting UNK for the first three innings, she gave up an RBI single to freshman first baseman Katie Ruwe (Blair) in the fourth and then allowed two more runs in the fifth.

In that inning, sophomore shortstop Mallory Noakes (2 for 4) followed a sac fly by junior left fielder Mackenzie Tomlin (Grand Island) with a RBI single.

Junior Brittinie Kreiser (2-5) was the tough luck loser as she struck out seven and walked none. Allowing two earned on eight hits, she shut out Pitt for the first four innings.

Ruwe staked UNK to a 3-1 lead in the first inning of game one thanks to a three-run homer that was just right of the left field foul pole. She is now tied with junior third baseman Sarah Rome for the Loper lead in homers at five.

Pitt's Kyndel Shelburn (7-7) settled down, however, blanking UNK over the next six innings. She allowed seven hits and walked three while fanning eight.

Taking advantage of eight illegal pitches thrown by Loper sophomore Taryn Trosper (2-5), Pitt scored a run in the second and tied things with an unearned run in the sixth.

In the Gorilla seventh, Grove led off with a double and pinch runner Kylie Harpst later scored the game winner on a ground out by McCreath.

Noakes went 3 for 3 with a run scored with Trosper allowing three earned on eight hits and five walks in seven full.

UNK plays at Southwest Baptist (Friday) and Central Missouri (Saturday) next week. Prior to those games, the Lopers will make up a postponed double header with Northeastern State on Thursday at SBU in Bolivar, Mo.

On Sunday, Kearney finishes up a postponed March 30th double with Truman State. The Bulldogs lead game one, 6-0, in the top of the fourth inning.
