Box Score 3 Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney team remained perfect on the young season by sweeping both Black Hills State (-17, -18, -18) and South Dakota Mines (-15, -15, -18) Saturday at the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Ruza Fall Classic at the Health & Sports Center.
Â
UNK was the only team in the tourney to go 4-0; both BHSU and Newman (Kans.), who didn't play the Lopers, went 2-2 with Mines, Chadron State and William Jewell each posting 1-3 records.
Â
After leading Kearney in kills in two wins Friday, Lincoln senior outside
Ashley Leitner was at it again today, going for 15 against the Yellowjackets and recording 14 in the win over the Hardrockers.
Â
For the weekend, the 2011 All-RMAC selection averaged 4.33 kills per set and hit a sizzling .339. She also had seven aces, 22 digs and three blocks.
Â
A long Leitner serving stretch helped UNK pull away from the team that replaced them in the RMAC, the Black Hills 'Jackets. Getting 12 kills from outside Amy O'Neill, Black Hills hung around in each set but UNK recorded 17 more kills and dug up 16 more balls to earn the victory.
Â
Freshman middle
Bailey Sokolowski (Kearney Catholic H.S.) supplied 10 kills and three blocks with freshmen outside
Kinslie TeKolste (Lincoln SE) at a team-best 17 digs and nine kills.
Â
A rare D2 independent, Mines also played its best match of the weekend against the Lopers. Recording 36 kills as a team the 'Rockers got 21 digs from libero Mikkella Reese and 11 kills from middle Sam Johnson.
Â
Trailing only four times on the night, UNK got 12 kills and a .600 hitting percentage from senior middle
Ellie Pesavento (Omaha Marian) and 20 digs from junior libero
Liz McGowan (G.I. Central Catholic). Â
Â
Finally, Colorado sophomore setter
Erin Seele handed out 82 assists on the day while also having 16 digs, five kills and an ace.
Â
UNK hosts Hastings College Tuesday night.
