Northeastern State Gets Hot, Rallies Past UNK

Sydney Seberger had a career-high 17 points tonight
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Northeastern State closed on a 26-8 run to rally past the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team, 64-61, Thursday night in Tahlequah, Okla.

The RiverHawks improve to 7-8 (4-4) while the Lopers fall to 6-8 (3-5)..

Having just 11 turnovers, UNK led for the first 39 minutes. However, some cold shooting doomed the chances at victory as NSU rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to pull out the win.

A three by Beatrice senior Shelby Zimmerman began the scoring and the Lopers had its first double digit lead by the 8:51 mark of the first half. Ahead 35-27 at the break, UNK went on an 8-0 run, capped by a jumper by sophomore reserve Sydney Seberger (Lexington), to lead 53-38 with 9:24 to play.

That's when the 'Hawks made their move. Over the final nine minutes, NSU went 8 of 9 from the field, including a 3 of 3 effort from behind the three point line. They were shooting around 26% before this hot stretch.

While they were just 7 of 12 at the line during this time, the 'Hawks held UNK to a 3 of 12 effort (25%) from the field. The Lopers also had four turnovers, two resulting in layups for the home team.

Junior reserve guard Che'Ron Lewis gave NSU its first lead of the night, 60-59, thanks to layup with a minute to go. She missed the ensuing free throw but the Lopers missed a shot at the other end.

The RiverHawks missed two more freebies but Kearney couldn't take advantage, missing two threes while 5-5 junior guard Fontana Tate made a layup with 16 seconds left to make it 62-59.

After senior guard Nicole Arp (Kearney H.S.) made a shot in the lane, Tate finished the scoring with two made free throws. A last second three by senior guard Sarah Hix (Broomfield, Colo.) didn't fall, allowing the 'Hawks to win at home for the sixth time.

Out rebounding Kearney by eight, 45-37, NSU almost got a quadruple double from 5-11 senior forward Carrington Fox. In 30 minutes, she had 11 rebounds, nine points, eight blocks and five assists.

As a team, NSU blocked 13 shots, thus holding UNK to a 33.9% effort (21 of 62) from the field. The blocks had a big effect on the Lopers shot selection as they had season-highs in threes made (eight) and attempted (24).

Besides Fox, Lewis had 10 points and six rebounds with Tate having a team-high 12 points, six boards and three assists.

Seberger paced Kearney with a career-high 17 points on 7 of 11 (3 of 5 threes) shooting. Playing 18 minutes off the bench, she had 11 of her points in the first half.

Next, junior post Amarah Williams (St. Louis) had 11 points and eight boards with South Dakota freshman reserve post Kelsey Fitzgerald at five points and a team-best nine rebounds.

UNK is at Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos fell to 23rd-ranked Fort Hays State, 64-38, tonight.
