Two Double Doubles Not Enough for Loper Women

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Junior guard Janelle Travis scored a career-high 20 points and handed out six assists to help Washburn come back from an early deficit to defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 82-70, Thursday at the Health & Sports Center.
 
The Ichabods are now 13-5 (8-3) with the Lopers falling at home for the first time in 2013-14 (5-1). 
 
Kearney (7-11, 3-8) came out strong, using three shots from behind the arc to lead 22-12 by the 11:08 mark. However, Washburn responded with an 18-7 run over the next six minutes to never trail again.
 
Travis, a 5-7 guard from California, had eight of points during this run with Elkhorn native Brittney Lynch scoring four of her 12. Washburn led 40-37 at the break and slowly built its lead in the second half, thanks to 56% (14 of 25) shooting.
 
After a hot start, UNK finished 5 of 23 from the three point line to have an overall field goal percentage of 39.7 (27 of 68).
 
Averaging 9.5 points on the year, Travis was 6 of 9 from the field (4 of 7 threes) to reach her point total. A 6-1 junior post, Lynch also had nine rebounds and three steals with 6-1 junior post Honor Duvall, a transfer from Division I Long Island U., providing 14 points and five boards off the bench.
 
To overcome a 39-36 deficit on the glass, the Ichabods scored 20 points off of 17 UNK turnovers.
 
The Lopers, out rebounding a team that came in with a plus nine margin on the season, got double doubles from senior Shelby Zimmerman (Beatrice) and junior Amarah Williams (St. Louis).
 
Zimmerman had 21 points and 12 rebounds to record her second straight double double with Williams at 19 points and 10 boards. Grabbing 10 of UNK's 12 o-boards, this pair also combined to go 15 of 28 (54%) from the floor.
 
UNK hosts 3rd-ranked Emporia State Saturday afternoon. The Hornets dropped to 18-2 with a 72-57 setback at Fort Hays State tonight.
