Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The 12th-ranked Wayne State College women's basketball team had four score in double figures and held Nebraska Kearney to 27 percent shooting to post a 78-50 win Friday night in Wayne.
This was the season opener for both teams.
Wayne, now holding a 36-30 all-time series lead, hadn't played the Lopers since early in the 2008-09 season. Leading from start to finish, the 'Cats sunk 10 three pointers and forced 23 turnovers to beat UNK for first time since 2005.
Suiting up nine players, Kearney did have a 49-37 rebounding advantage, including a 26-9 mark at the offensive end. However, all those caroms didn't help as the Lopers were 18 of 67 (7 of 22 threes) from the field.
Wayne led 15-4 six minutes in but the Lopers fought back, getting two free throws by freshman reserve guard
Taylor Neilson (Meeker, Colo.) to make it 21-18 by the 8:36 mark. However, the Wildcats scored the next 10 points and never looked back.
Senior guard Ashton Yossi had a team-high 15 points for Wayne, going 5 of 12 (3 of 9 threes) from the floor. Backcourt mate and UNL transfer Saddie Murren also made 5 of 12 shots to tally 13 with UNO transfer Jordan Spencer at 12 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Off the bench, 6-2 junior post Katie Hoskins sunk all five shots she attempted to score 11. She also had six rebounds and four steals in 26 minutes.
For UNK, freshman wing
McKenzie Brown (G.I. Northwest) had 14 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive) with junior guard
Laramey Lewis (Trenton) going 6 of 9 from the field to score 14. She also had nine boards, four assists and four steals.
Up front, senior
Amarah Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes with sophomore
Kelsey Fitzgerald (Yankton, S.D.) at eight points and eight rebounds.
Kearney faces 25th-ranked Northern State Saturday night. The Wolves downed NW Missouri State, 73-49, on Friday
