Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney men's basketball team got 43 points from four true freshmen and went on a 17-0 run to win at Chadron State, 78-62, Friday night.
This was the 175th all-time meeting between the two with UNK (1-1) winning 113 of those games.
Playing in the recently opened Chicoine Events Center, the Lopers scored the final four points of the first half to break a 31 all tie. Opening up a 10-point second half cushion, UNK's lead dwindled to five, 52-47, by the 12:50 mark after a dunk by Roderick Butler.
The Lopers more than responded, scoring the next 17 points to put the game on ice. Eight of the points during this six minute stretch came from freshman reserve post
Trey Lansman (Harlan, Ia).
"It got very physical. We knew coming in Chadron was going to be pumped up. UNK is always a big game for them," said Kearney co-head coach
Tom Kropp. "We were down three or four times in the first half and had some kids come off the bench and really help us."
Making his first career start, York freshman
Ty Danielson tallied a team-high 17 points thanks to 4 of 7 three point shooting. Fellow first-year guard
Isaiah McKay (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had nine points on 4 of 7 shooting with Pierce reserve guard
Lane Rohrich having three triples in the first half.
Inside, Lansman finished with eight points (4 of 4 free throws), five rebounds and three blocks in just 14 minutes.
UNK out shot Chadron by 10 percent, 45-35, and had one fewer turnover than the Eagles with both clubs grabbing 38 boards. At the line, the Lopers sunk 18 of 23 shots with CSC attempting only 15 freebies.
The Eagles did have 17 second chance points on 13 offensive caroms.
Among Loper veterans, Norfolk junior forward
Ethan Brozek had a big second half to record another double double (15 points & 10 rebounds) with Ravenna junior wing
Connor Beranek at nine rebounds, seven points and a team-high six assists.
"We closed the half on a run and then came out for 15 minutes and played like the basketball team we thought we were capable of," said Kropp. "A big part of that was Ethan, Connor and Davion (Pearson) stepping up."
Butler and Davante McCallam both had 14 points to pace the Eagles.
UNK is now off until Monday, December 1st, when Doane College comes to town.
