Laramey Lewis scored a career-high 33 points and senior center
Amarah Williams had another double double to help Nebraska Kearney race past Southwest Minnesota State, 105-66, Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.
The Lopers (1-3) pick up their first win of the 2014-15 season while SMSU, from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, drops to 0-3.
This is the first time in school history UNK has scored 100 points in back-to-back games; the Lopers had 115 in a double OT loss to Midland on Monday. Prior to that, the last 100 point effort came back in 2008.
Kearney dominated in all phases tonight, shooting 56% from the field, sinking 12 threes, tallying 29 fast break points thanks to 16 steals and having a plus 15 rebounding margin, 44-29.
Leading from start to finish, the Lopers go a three from Grand Island freshman
McKenzie Brown to make 8-4 at the 14:51 mark. Lewis (Trenton) then scored five straight to spark a 13-4 run.
UNK led 44-23 at the break and then shot 61% in the second half to tally 61 more points. The school record for points in a game is 116, set by the 2002-03 squad in a win over Nova Southeastern, Fla.
The Lopers were just two off the team three point record as Lewis had 23 of her points after halftime. She finished the night 11 of 18 (6 of 8 3's) from the field and 5 of 6 at the line. The team captain also had five rebounds and three steals.
This is the highest scoring effort by a Loper since post Anne Manning went for 37 in a loss at Chadron State in January 2005. Guard Darcy Stracke holds the UNK record (43), set in a 1998 win over Nebraska Omaha.
Next, Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) managed 20 points and a career-best 15 boards. Nine of her caroms came at the defensive end while she made 8 of 15 shots. Williams now has seven career double doubles, including two this winter.
Finally, Brown (15 points & 7 assists), sophomore point guard
Alexa Hogberg (15 points & 9 assists) and sophomore reserve wing
Tori Payne (9 rebounds & 8 points) almost had double doubles.
Bellevue East graduate Amaun Frazier came off the bench to have 13 points and four assists for Southwest. The 'Stangs are coached by former Loper All-American Allison Kruger.
