UNK and WU just faced each other in Kearney, the 'Bod women claiming an 82-70 victory on January 30th with the Loper men rallying for an 88-79 win.
The Ichabod men (15-5, 8-5) are 11-1 at home and coming off a 79-74 win over rival Emporia State. They fell, in overtime, to Fort Hays State last Saturday, 87-85.
Four average in double figures, led by 6-6, 215 lbs. junior Alex North. The hometown product is at 15.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game while shooting 50% from the floor.
He has posted five straight double doubles, including a 16 & 13 effort vs. the Lopers.
Ultra quick Kyle Wiggins (14.9 points, 3.8 assists and 3.0 rebounds), a 6-2 guard, had 18 in Kearney as Washburn led 39-29 at the half but gave up 59 second half points.
On the women's side, WU (13-7, 8-5) is 8-2 at home after a 69-63 loss to 7th-ranked Emporia on Wednesday. Last Saturday, Hays got by the 'Bods, 69-62.
Five are in double figures, led by junior guards Casyn Buchman (16.0) and Taylor Ignoto (14.4). Reserve post Honor Duvall had 14 and five in the win over UNK as starting post Kara Lee got into early foul trouble.
UNK (7-13, 3-10) out boarded the 'Bods, 39-36, but shot 22% (5 of 23) from the three point line and committed 17 turnovers.
That strong board work has been a recent trend for the Lopers. Facing some of the top rebounding teams in the MIAA hasn't stopped Kearney from having a plus margin in each of the last four games.
Veterans
Amarah Williams (6.7) and
Shelby Zimmerman (7.8) are two of the four Lopers pulling down four caroms a game with UNK averaging nearly 14 o-boards every night.
On the perimeter, Trenton sophomore
Laramey Lewis is warming up, having reached double digits in four of the last six games. That
includes double doubles at Central Oklahoma and vs. Hays.
To win five straight, the UNK men (10-10, 6-7) are allowing 75.2 points per night and getting balanced scoring.
Freshman guard
Kevin Dineen (Creighton Prep) had a season-best 13 in Wednesday's win over Hays with junior reserve
Delquan Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) having 10 in the win over Washburn.
Sophomore wing Connor Bernaek continues to lead UNK (18.2 points & 6.7 rebounds) with sophomore post
Ethan Brozek (15.9 & 6.3) close behind.
Next week, UNK has just one game, a home tilt vs. Pitt State Wednesday night.
