UNK Uses 21 Hits to Beat UCM, 20-3

Jayke Brock
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team had 21 hits and scored 10 runs in the first inning to beat Central Missouri, 20-3, in the second game of a double header Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

On a very, very windy day in Kearney, the Mules (14-8, 11-4) scored four runs in the third to win game one, 8-1. They also won Friday night, 11-7.

The Lopers (14-8, 8-7) hadn't gotten a lot of breaks over the first two games in the series. That all changed in the bottom of the first today as nine hits included a wind-blown infield single, a triple that took a sharp bounce over the UCM right fielder and an RBI bunt single that hugged the right field line.

The inning also included two walks and a hit batter. UCM starter Kyle Gehrs (2-2) lasted just one third of an inning and was one of five Mules to throw.

Later, Kearney scored two in the fourth and five more in the fifth. On the mound, Iowa senior Logan Willard (3-0) allowed three earned over five full innings with Colorado junior Ross Mortensen throwing two scoreless innings.

From the eight hole, senior DH Jayke Brock (Grand Junction, Colo.) went 4 for 4 with three RBI's and two runs, sophomore right fielder Anthony Pacheco (Kearney Catholic H.S.) was 3 for 4 with four RBI's and two runs and junior second baseman Coby Roming (Canyon, Texas) was 3 for 6 with three RBI's and three runs.

This was Kearney's first contest with 20 plus runs since a 24-8 smashing of Regis, at Memorial, in March 2012.

UNK was shut down by Mule starter Ricky Rivera (4-1) in the first game. He threw a complete game four-hitter, blanking the Lopers until an RBI single by Brock (2 for 3) in the seventh.

UCM's big third inning featured three hits, including a two-run single by catcher Matt Molbury, and a Loper throwing error. Overall, five of the Mule runs were unearned as UNK had three errors and a passed ball.

Due to weather, Sunday's first game has been pushed back to a 2:00 p.m. start.
