Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Senior
Logan Willard remained won another game and sophomore
Joe Smidt recorded another save to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Washburn, 4-1, in the second game of a double header Friday night at Memorial Field.
The Ichabods (18-17, 17-14) used a five spot in game one to win going away, 13-3.
An Iowa native who was at Division I Indiana State last year, Willard is now 4-0 with a 4.47 ERA. Tonight, he struck out three and walked just one while giving up three hits in six full innings.
Catcher David Ganutt led off the Washburn fourth with a homer to left with first baseman Matt Jackson (2 for 3) hitting a single to center to begin the seventh. That brought in Smidt, who promptly got a 4-6-3 double play to thwart the 'Bods rally. A simple pop up to left ended the things, giving Smidt his fifth save in his last seven appearances.
He also has gone 9.1 innings, dating back to March 22nd, without allowing an earned run.
Offensively, junior first baseman
Danny Droll hit a solo homer, his fifth of the year, in the bottom of the first with junior center fielder
Brandon Landanger belting a two-run shot well over the right field fence as part of a three-run second.
Droll (Penrose, Colo.) and Landanger (Kearney) also went yard in game one but the 'Bods had 15 hits and took advantage of four errors and four walks to score in six different innings.
Third baseman Kyle Carnahan and right fielder Wes Jones each went 3 for 4 with three RBI's with Jackson hitting two homers to finish 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI's.
On the mound for Washburn, right hander Brett Ash threw a complete game four-hitter to push his record to 4-1. Coming in with a 0.88 ERA, he allowed two earned while fanning one and walking one.
For UNK (23-15, 17-14), senior southpaw
Mannie Reinsch (Kearney) struck out four in two innings with junior lefty
David Boddiger (Longmont, Colo.) fanning three in 3.1 innings.
The series concludes tomorrow with a single game beginning at noon.
