Web Gem Allows Softball to Hold Off Pitt

Taylre Keenan
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kearney, Neb. – Freshman left fielder Taylre Keenan threw out the game tying run at home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Nebraska-Kearney hold off Pittsburg State, 6-5, in the second game of a double header Friday night in Kansas.

Due to weather, these games were moved up two days. The Gorillas (22-22, 8-12) scored eight unearned runs in the fourth inning to win game one, 8-0.

UNK (10-24, 8-14) has had trouble holding leads all season and that scenario was playing out again when Pitt loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh in game two.

However, the Lopers managed to turn a lineout into a double play as Blair sophomore first baseman Kate Ruwe caught the ball and tagged first before Bailey Letts could get back to the base.

Eight-hole hitter Jordan Bradshaw followed with a single to left, bringing home a run. Keenan (Ralston) fielded the ball cleanly and threw the ball to sophomore catcher Erin Dwyer, who tagged out Darion Jaso.

The Lopers broke a four all tie in the top of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Ruwe and a Pitt throwing error that allowed junior shortstop Mallory Noakes (Lincoln SW) to score from second.

Iowa senior Brittnie Kreiser (5-7) got the win by striking out seven in six full with Grand Island junior Taryn Trosper saving her second game of 2014. At the plate, Dwyer (Elmwood-Murdock H.S.) went 2 for 4 with senior third baseman Sarah Rome (Blair) having a two-run single as part of a four-run first.

Trosper shut out Pitt for the first 3.2 innings in game one. An error kept the fourth inning going and the Gorillas took advantage, getting a Grand Slam from designated player McKenzie Rynard and a three-run shot from pitcher Kylie Harpst.

Harpst threw a complete game two-hit shut out to improve to 8-6.

Kearney is at Missouri Southern State tomorrow.
