Pitt Scores in the 10th to Take Series Opener

Steady southpaw Aaron Smith
Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior third baseman Brad Foss hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to help Pittsburg State rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 6-5, Thursday night in Kansas.

This was the start of a four-game MIAA series. Due to the Easter Holiday, the series was moved up a full day.

Pitt (16-27, 11-21) scored two unearned runs in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. The Lopers (24-16, 18-15) got a game-tying single off the bat of senior DH Jayke Brock (2 for 4) with one out in the top the ninth to force extra innings.

In the faithful 10th inning, nine-hole hitter Sam Falcon led off with a single and then moved to second on a one-out single by shortstop Derek Hackney (2 for 4). That brought up Foss (2 for 5), who managed to hit a single through the right side.

UNK closer Joe Smidt (North Platte) suffered the loss, allowing that one earned run in 1.1 innings. Senior starter Alex Sosa (Miami, Fla.) gave up just two earned and fanned four Gorillas in five innings with junior lefty Aaron Smith (Cheyenne, Wyo.) throwing three scoreless innings.

Pitt countered with senior righty Tyler Thompson (4-5), a transfer from Division I Missouri State. He struck out 11 and walked only four in 8.1 innings. Giving up four earned runs, he now has 71 K's 66.1 innings this year.

Sophomore Ryan McKay evened his record at 3-3 by throwing the final 1.2 innings for Pitt. He fanned two more and didn't walk a batter.

Besides Brock (Grand Junction, Colo.), juniors Brandon Landanger (Kearney) and Coby Roming (Canyon, Texas) each went 2 for 6. The Lopers did leave 13 runners on base while Pitt stranded only five.

The two teams play a double header Friday starting at 3:00 p.m.
