Liz McGowan and sophomore
Bailey Sokolowski combined for 21 kills to help the 9th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team sweep a pesky Newman Jets squad (-22, -14, -17) Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the fifth and final match on day one of the New Victorian Inn & Suites/Runa Fall Classic. UNK swept Western State (-11, -12, -15) this afternoon.
The Jets (1-2), from Wichita, moved ahead in the first, 12-11, after a kill by Shelby Zoglman. After UNK went on a 13-6 run, highlighted by three kills from sophomore outside
Kinslie TeKolste, Newman came back once again.
Back-to-back unforced Kearney errors, along with two kills from Sarah Peterson, made it 24-22 and forced Loper coach
Rick Squiers to call timeout.
Sokolowski (Kearney Catholic) recorded one of her match-high 11 kills to give UNK a 1-0 match lead. The Lopers trailed just one more time as Newman hit below .100 in both the second and third sets.
McGowan (G.I. Central Catholic) had 10 kills and a match-high 21 digs with Sokolowski hitting .348 and having one of UNK's four solo blocks.
Coming off the bench, TeKolste had eight kills, as did starting right side
Kelle Carver (Shawnee Mission, Kans.). Finally, junior setter
Erin Seele (Johnstown, Colo.) was at 48 assists, 14 digs, five kills, two blocks and a service ace.
Newman was paced by Ashley Gonzalez with seven kills and a block.
UNK takes on South Dakota Mines (12:15 p.m.) and 21st-ranked Northern State (7:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
