Box Score Kearney, Neb. – Senior forward Martell Collins scored 22 points and senior reserve forward Juwan Newmen grabbed 12 defensive rebounds to help Southwestern Oklahoma State defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 79-72, Saturday night in Weatherford, Okla.
The game was part of the SWOSU Classic. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs led from start to finish as they held UNK to 38% (26 of 69) shooting. That included a 5 of 31 effort from behind the arc; the 31 attempts are just nine off the Loper record.
After having three players foul out in Friday's win over Southern Nazarene, UNK saw forwards

Trey Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) foul out tonight with senior post
Ethan Brozek (Norfolk) limited to 23 minutes due to four fouls.
Not surprisingly, SWOSU took advantage inside, having a 46-35 edge on the glass.
Despite the cold shooting and foul trouble, Kearney hung around. Down 39-33 at the intermission, the Lopers trailed 51-47 at the midway point of the second half after a layup by Brozek. Three minutes later, two free throws by Lansman made it just a three point game, 57-54.
However, SWOSU responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted by the only three Collins made all night. UNK made one more move, whittling an 11-point deficit down to four, 76-72, with 40 seconds to go. But, the 'Dawgs went 3 for 4 at the line to finish the scoring.
Collins (6-5, 200 lbs.) went 7 of 14 from the field and 6 of 6 at the line to reach his point total. As a team, SWOSU was 28 of 42 at the charity stripe; UNK made 15 of 19 freebies.
A transfer from Division I Central Connecticut State, Newman (6-8, 220 lbs.) had a productive 22 minutes. Besides his board work, he scored seven, blocked three shots and had two steals. Finally, sophomore guard Collin Jennings scored 19 points and grabbed six defensive boards in 30 minutes.
Playing 35 minutes, Lansman had his first collegiate double double (20 points and 10 rebounds). He was 7 of 11 from the line, 6 of 12 from the field and grabbed nine defensive caroms.
Fouling out in the final minute, Beranek also made 6 of 12 shots to score 17. He also had two blocks and grabbed seven boards (six defensive). Finally for UNK, sophomore guards
Isaiah McKay (11) and
Lane Rohrich (10) reached double figures.
Chadron State visits Wednesday night. The Eagles dropped an exhibition game at Division I South Dakota State, 87-52, on Friday.
