Late Runs Help UNK Sweep Northwest

Box Score Kearney, Neb. – The 12th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team used two late runs to sweep Northwest Missouri State (-19, -17, -22) Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (24-5, 12-3) pushes its win streak to seven straight while the Bearcats fall to 15-9 (8-6).

Having five players between six and 11 kills, Kearney found itself in a match that featured 25 ties and 10 lead changes. To win in three, the Lopers finished the first set on a 9-2 run and then erased a 21-18 deficit in the third set with a 7-1 closing spurt.

"I thought we played really good in some areas," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "We were a little bit different tonight. Our offense kind of carried the day. It seemed like we were in system a lot, we serve received well, hit a good efficiency and had some balance."

From the right side, Omaha junior Annie Wolfe had 14 digs, 11 kills and hit .364 with Ogallala freshman middle hitting a team-best .471 and recording 10 kills and two blocks.

On the outside, Greeley junior Skyler Erickson and Yutan sophomore Kaitlynn Thomas both had eight kills with Lincoln sophomore middle Tara Ziegelbein at six kills and a block.

"Defensively, we were just good enough. Felt like we left some plays out there," said Squiers. "The tipped balls, balls off the block … some frustrating ones that dropped on our side. At the end (of the third set), we did make some defensive plays. For us to make a push, we'll need to do that more often."

UNK out hit Northwest by just over 100 points, .248 to .142, and also dug up 12 more balls, 55-43. The 'Cats did have 9.5 blocks and served up two aces.

Northwest saw all five starters register at least four kills, including Miranda Foster with a team-high nine.

Missouri Western State visits tomorrow night at seven. The Griffons rallied for a five set win at Fort Hays State Friday night to improve to 20-6.
