UNK Stung by Emporia, 74-72

Box Score Kearney, Neb.  – Junior southpaw Terrence Moore scored a team-high 27 points and sophomore Jevon Taylor was big off the bench to help Emporia State upset Nebraska Kearney, 74-72, Sunday afternoon in Kansas.

The Lopers (13-6, 8-4) see a five-game win streak end and are now in a four-way tie for third in the MIAA. The Hornets improve to 10-11 (3-9) and stop a four-game skid.

In a game with 15 lead changes and 12 ties, Emporia took the lead for good at the 5:22 mark after Taylor hit his second and final three of the night. The long range shot made it 61-60 and then Moore added back-to-back buckets to push the lead to four, 65-61, with 2:03 left.

Last year, Moore had 27 in a 92-83 win over UNK in White Auditorium.

After an old-fashioned three point play from Ravenna junior Connor Beranek, Moore responded with one of his own.  The back and forth continued as Beranek hit a three, only to see Moore make a layup.

The Lopers then misfired on two threes and the Hornets went 3 for 4 at the line to lead 73-69 with 11 ticks left. Pierce freshman Lane Rohrich made things interesting with a three but Emporia made a free throw with three seconds left to finish the scoring.

UNK ended 12 of 18 at the line (66.7%) and 28 of 59 from the field (47.5). Beranek did most of the damage, going for 33 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two blocks in playing all 40 minutes.

His third double double of the year, he was 15 of 25 from the floor (1 of 3 threes) and 2 of 2 at the line. Finally, four of his caroms came at the offensive end.

Next, starters Trey Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) and Ethan Brozek (Norfolk) each scored 13. The pair also combined for 14 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

For Emporia, Moore made 11 field goals and five free throws while also grabbing five defensive boards, handing out three assists, blocking a shot and having a steal. Taylor and starting guard Micah Swank both scored 12, combining to go 4 of 10 from behind the arc.

UNK is at Fort Hays State Thursday night.
